What the 2nd amendment actually means nowadays is law abiding citizens have to live under the threat of constant gun violence. They can “gun” up if they want to dramatically increase the chance that they or their family will be shot and of course help make gun corporations rich.
The point was for people to form local “well-regulated militias” to act as a deterrent to federal overreach, but our culture of rugged individualism led to a different and very stupid interpretation of the 2nd amendment.
Honestly? To defend yourself primarily against your neighbors. Plenty of times the US hasn’t been dumb enough to go this quasi-official route; they just would rile up ordinary citizens and then sit back and just not interfere as those citizens went in and lynched and burned entire cities.
