Actually, the best UI I’ve seen from smart TVs actually comes from some of the cheapest TVs: ones that come with Roku built in. You still have the spyware problem, and sometimes the hardware is pretty low end, but the UI is just like any Roku device.
Is the Chromecast spying less? I haven’t looked into it, sp correct me if I’m wrong, but it just seems like you’re trading to a different company invading your privacy.
Sounds like a real haven for “free speech extremist” types. Personally, I’m not searching for social media with more hate, slurs and conspiracy nonsense. I’d go back to twitter if I wanted that.

The thing that gets me about the ads on BTB is that (based on the ads I get) IHeart apparently thinks of it as a “true crime” podcast and… I guess I can see that, but I’ve got zero interest in listening to podcasts about some weird small town murder or whatever.

There are a lot of ways to go. My own isn’t particularly efficient, but it’s an old rack mount server. Everything is built like a tank. It’s robust as hell, and yet everything was well used and cheap. Probably not a good solution if you live somewhere with expensive power, but I don’t.

Recently I added Nextcloud to facilitate cutting several Google products out of my life. Combined with a few FOSS apps, it’s currently doing the job of Drive (storage) and Keep (notes), and I’m planning to move my contacts and calendar this week.
So every user is their own moderator… which just sounds like a ton of extra work vs something like Mastodon where I can pick a server whose moderation practices I agree with, is already decentralized into countless servers and allows the user to spin up their own instance.
Keyword filtration as a moderation technique is woefully ineffective vs trolls who simply find “clever” new ways to harass with intentional misspellings, dogwhistles, etc.
Meanwhile, you’re pitching this thing as “uncensorable” which automatically appeals to the worst elements available. Maybe I’m wrong and it’ll be the perfect format for internet discussion, but I’m going to have to see that actually happen before I jump on board.
