Hello thanks for visiting my profile.

I lol’d at Evergreen. Excellent choice.
Respectfully, I disagree. Yes, indeed this first message is PR damage control, but there is something to be gained here for the FOSS community.
This backtrack sends the message out, discouraging other companies with legal departments from trying the same trick else they risk sales. If a positive resolution comes out of this (A. Andre’s project becomes officially supported by Haier with more features whilst being more efficient with API calls, or B. Haier develops a local API option) then it shows other companies there is value in working together with the FOSS community rather than viewing them as an adversary or as competition to be eliminated.
I’m glad the threat of being on a FOSS Hall of Shame is effective for some companies, and that they can’t just frivolous lawsuit away a hobby developer without consequences to their bottom line, which would have set a bad precedent against small-time FOSS developers everywhere.
Now their status to me is moved from “Shitlist” to “Shitlist Pending”, they’ve talked their talk so now it’s time to see them walk their walk. Best would be to allow users to control their Haier products from their own servers rather than Haier’s. That will reduce their cloud computing bills from 3rd party users but they can still offer “compelling value” in their walled garden ecosystem as a simple one-and-done setup. Win-win right?
Someone tell Gianpiero! You could save up to 20% on Amazon fees in just 5 minutes. Commit to a Local API today!
I’ve not set up Nextcloud myself, so a basic question first: have you already tried canyouseeme.org to check for the running service on that port?
If the service is not available, then either your server or the router isn’t configured correctly. If it is, then the problem is in the software.
Very true. Also I like your username :)
“RAID is not a backup” just means that the entire RAID disk counts as one copy of the files.
Non original media doesn’t matter unless you think you have old obscure things that aren’t even on Internet archive or private torrent groups, or it has some sentimental value like a VTR recording of something you watched as a kid. Most you can download again and likely in better definition.
Focus first on getting at least 2 separate backups of the most important stuff: your family photos and videos. Then records, then work stuff.
A SATA ADATA SU800 died on me after 4 years of use. (Luckily I had a weekly harddrive backup so I lost almost nothing! :D)
Samsung, WD, Lexar, Kingston generally are known reliable name brands (but Samsung warranty doesn’t work well in Canada). If you watch !bapcsalescanada@lemmy.ca like a hawk (Canada’s PC part sales mirrored from Reddit) you may find the occasional deal that is at or under $50/TB Canadian (roughly 36 US$, 35€)
E:I noticed it hasn’t posted in a couple days, wonder if it died or got banned
Might be what we’d need to do for small servers lacking moderation, wanting to avoid the liability from potentially hosting harmful images.
I used postimg.cc when hosting was having issues, I’ll probably use it more to ease up Lemmy admins’ jobs.
Hey db0 thanks for putting in extra effort to help the community (as you have multiple times) when big issues like this crop up on Lemmy.
Despite being a pressing issue this is one that people also are a little reluctant to help solve because of fear of getting in trouble themselves. (How can a server admin develop a method to detect and remove/prevent CSAM distribution without accessing known examples which is extremely illegal?)
Another time being the botspam wave where you developed Overseer in response very quickly. I’m hoping here too devs will join you to work out how to best implement the changes into Lemmy to combat this problem.
Yes it is definitely possible! Just have no pictrs installed/running with the server. Note it will still be possible to link external images.
Let me try to figure this out. The first is a photo uploaded to lemmy.world, the second is a photo originally uploaded to lemmy.nz, both posts are in a federated version of lemmy.world’s shitpost community.
This is just a theory, but perhaps images hosted on the same server as the federated community will directly link, whereas images uploaded somewhere other than the federated community will be copied into cache, presumably in case the original host shuts down unexpectedly? See if this is the case?
Cue Homer Simpson: This is the worst thing you’ve seen in your life so far
At least a handful of users on hexbear had made their intention clear during the first week of re-federation, they were looking to cause chaos on Lemmy for there own pleasure. I don’t know if they were banned and/or their comments deleted.
The fact we’re on the first screen of results is progress! 🎉
Neat, I did already transfer my budgeting to GNUCash a few months ago, but this looks shiny too.
