  • I just use borg on a timer. I can set it on my various machines via a shell script or on my NixOS machine in the config. I have it backup stuff daily at the same time, have automatically remove old backups after a certain period of time, and I can easily mount it to whatever computer using an alias. I don’t think about it, just does it, easy peasy.

  • should be find depending on the chat server.

I mean hell we used to do this way back in the day with IRC and Quake servers. it’s not hard at all and you don’t need to over think it. I mean it’s not like the thing is going to crash often so I’m not sure why you want to spread it out. I generally reboot my server like once a month and it takes all of 5min.

Depending on the game and the type of chat server you’re looking to run I don’t think you need to over think it. Just start out with like a VPS, see how it goes, maybe switch it up to a dedicated. neither are expensive.

  • I use Bitwardens self hosted option, VaultWarden, that I run in a docker. works fine. I use it with the bitwarden CLI since I’m using QuteBrowser on all my machines. I then run a weekly backup of my vaultwarden to an external ssd.

Beauty of it is that it will also work with Bitwardens extension on chrome or firefox. So if I’m on another machine and I need access to my PW’s I can just install the extension, add my self-hosted vaultwarden, then remove it when i’m done.

  • I run Akkoma, Navidrome, Searx, valutwarden, RomM, Forgejo, wireguard, RDP, and a few other things all via docker. Honestly I just keep everything in their own dir and just have Yazi on my server to make it easier to manage. I don’t auto update anything, it’s all manual updates.

I’m probably going to slap Watchtower in there to just make things easier. don’t really need to over think it in all honesty.

I have OVH for dedicated but I’ve also used their VPS and they’re great. They leave me alone, don’t hound me for anything, cheap prices, reliable as I’ve never had issues them. can’t complain. They’re Euro based but they have servers near me in Montreal so I use that which is great when I put my VPN on there cause now I get student discounts everywhere since my server is at McGill University.
