Hope it succeeds, I’d love every other manufacturer to copy the format so there’s a chance of it one day being affordable!
Weird that it’s so out of date, but if they wanted it gone from there they could say it was violating some security rule or other. I guess they could remove some necessary APIs if they actually want to break it.
Seems like a lot of effort to remove one app which they could presumably just ban if they actually wanted to.
I wonder what their overall goal is. Maybe making Android viable as a development platform to one day claw some market share from macbooks?
The only thing you will need for this is an updated Android device
Unless they backport it then it looks like it won’t be available on older devices, so no new lease of life for an old phone unfortunately
Thanks! Weird that this doesn’t appear as a push notification like a normal software update.
What does this mean? What is “google play system”, is it different to “google play services”? Doesn’t that update itself? Are you describing something that’s specific to a particular device, ROM, or android version? Fancy giving us any more info at all?
It’s pretty trivial to just keep your card in your pocket and use the bank’s website though
I would also like to know! This seems like advice from the early days of Android when the software was way more buggy, everything seems very stable nowadays and I rarely find myself needing to reboot because something is in a bad state.
The thinner display also left more room for the battery—Google probably could have made the phone body thinner and left the cameras to stick out, but instead, the 9a has the largest battery ever put in a Pixel. Yes, Google actually did the thing we always chastise OEMs for not doing.
Big fan of this, I always thought huge lumpy cameras sticking out was a stupid trend.
This is great news! I imagine we’ll see some negative articles focusing on how they’re just re-releasing old hardware, but I feel anyone who cares about that wasn’t the target market for a Pebble anyway. Hopefully it goes well and we’ll see some actual new Pebbles next.
Well it’s my current phone and it’s bigger than the last one. Have you only been using massive phones if you think this is small?
Pixel 5 definitely doesn’t have a headphone jack. It’s also the biggest phone I’ve ever used! It is quite a nice device though.
I don’t think there’s any formal concept of a cross-post in Lemmy, the button in Summit will just create a new post with a link to the original and the description text quoted. They are essentially just two different posts.
Welcome! FYI you can type !android@lemmy.world to link a community
I stuck with it for a long time but it does seem like those bugs are sadly never being fixed. Recently switched to Kvaesitso, it’s a bit weird initially but now I’ve set up a load of app groups/tags I’m pretty pleased with it.
The one premium game I found seems to run fine with network permission blocked so I guess it’s developer-dependent
Swiping seems to work fine on Heliboard (I guess because it uses the same proprietary library as gboard)
Security is the priority, but that does usually give you a good amount of privacy too.
One example I remember where there was a clash was developing their sandboxed Google Play Services rather than supporting MicroG. I think their reasoning was that sandboxing the Google code makes it much more secure, and even though MicroG is more private from Google it’s still a mystery blob with full access to your device and therefore less secure.
Unlikely that they’ll ever provide Linux support? Yeah probably, but I wouldn’t have expected it from a name like Razer
